Difficult to advise in detail without knowing the site, your niche and
the keywords/keyphrases you are wanting to compete on.

You need quality backlinks from authoritative sites for the niche you
are competing. These can quite often come from joining some
organisations, professional bodies or partnering with people related to
your business.

If you are unsure what these might be you could also analyse the back
links of your competition - those that rank higher than you for a
specific search term. Do what they do, but better as well as paying
attention to decent content and "on site" seo.

Also your search term may be highly competitive and it may take months
or even years to rank well. It might pay to be less ambitious and aim
for "longer tail" search terms. There are more of them, and its easier
to rank well for them.
