I have decided to do a Microsoft MCBA this year. Can anyone sugest the best
route to take? I have looked at many options, but they all seem to have
downsides.

Anyone used this? I'm undecided if I should got for a proper NAS solution,
keep buying external hard drives, or just get some internal drives and stick
them in a couple of old PC's with freenas on the...

A host I use offers cron jobs from cpanel, so you don't need to have shell
access.
For servers with shell access I would recommend a nightly db dump and use of
rdiff-backup.

If you've got that many - it might be worth getting a virtual server, then
you only have to do the backup once each time, rather than one for each
site.
