I was hoping to avoid disturbing the host PC, which is one reason i am
trying to use a USB adaptor. Are you saying these do not work? It was
recommended by several people on a tech board I found. But I'll
certainly try one of those next if not.

No, it just goes through a cyclic series of normal sounding noises, as
if trying to initialise repeatedly. When put back in the original
laptop, Windows does start to boot; (the fault on this machine appears
to be on the motherboard) so I think the drive is OK.

If the owner had backed up properly as recommended I would not need to
be doing this!
