RE: FN-FORUM: Recovering data from a WinXP laptop HDD

Re. the USB adaptors, I'm sure they probably do work in some cases, it's
just that I think that you're more likely to get it to work using the IDE
cable as this is a more normal way to interface to a hard drive.
I wouldn't worry about disturbing the host pc, all you've got to do is take
the side off and plug it in.
I usually rest the laptop HD on a couple of books by the side of the PC.

I don't think this applies to USB devices does it?

I was hoping to avoid disturbing the host PC, which is one reason i am
trying to use a USB adaptor. Are you saying these do not work? It was
recommended by several people on a tech board I found. But I'll
certainly try one of those next if not.
>> does this mean you hear it kick out a really nasty clicking noise?
No, it just goes through a cyclic series of normal sounding noises, as
if trying to initialise repeatedly. When put back in the original
laptop, Windows does start to boot; (the fault on this machine appears
to be on the motherboard) so I think the drive is OK.
>> You did take backups, yes ?
If the owner had backed up properly as recommended I would not need to
be doing this!
Many thanks for all your help so far. Any more suggestions please?
David
