Re: FN-FORUM: expired domains

Ben,
After the expiry date the domain falls into a two month redemption
period where only the existing registrant can renew it. After that it
becomes free to register, hence the need for dropcatching services.
Unfortunately even if you back order it and you chosen service
captures it, if more than one person has back ordered it using that
service most companies invite them all to bid for it in a mini
auction. If the domain has no existing traffic and search engine
rankings, doesn't appear in DMOZ etc you may be lucky and secure it. I
would recommend you attempt to contact the existing owner and strike a
deal direct, you may have to pay a little more than you expected but
it should be cheaper and quicker than if it goes to auction.
Buying expired domains is big business, there is one domain that
becomes free tommorrow that is valued at $775,000 dollars, how sick is
that guy going to be when he realises that for the sake of a couple of
dollars he's thrown that away!
