Re: FN-FORUM: Recovering data from a WinXP laptop HDD

Knoppix does indeed automatically mount the USB drive/IDE adaptor and
allow me to copy the contents to the host WinXP drive, and then access
them from WinXP. I am very impressed with Knoppix; an extremely useful
tool.
Thank you so much Richard!
I was quite surprised the old laptop drive was still working at this
point, since in desperation I had tried connecting the adaptor both
ways around!
Thanks also everyone for all the other suggestions.
P.S. The IDE to USB adaptor cost =A314 incl. on eBay in case anyone else
is interested. In fact I think I could have gone for the cheaper
version; this one includes bits for connecting all kinds of other
drives. Phil's suggestion of a simple IDE adaptor cable would
obviously perform better, but this one can be connected to another
laptop, so suits me better. A drive caddy would presumable do the job
as well, and would provide a more useful external drive long term.
