Mike and Alain,

Thanks both for your (brutal) honesty.
I will work on all this, and funny you should say that Mike, the book
is on order, so hope to sort these basic problems out.
Mike, also apologies for not getting back to you... deadline was
looming so had to simplify it in the end.

That said, would anyone help offer reasons as to what (exactly) could
be causing this?

Just to clarify my code:

$UserOrderID comes from another bit at the top which for the purpose
of not getting myself into even more trouble, cut out to test and the
problem is still there.

connect.php contains the mysql_connect() and mysql_select_db()
statements to get the connection to the DB up and running.
