You could use an alternate port and/or a sub-domain.
The main benefit is the ease with which you can configure a firewall
rule and/or a webserver access rule to limit access to the admin
portion. You then lock this down to the IP address of the client
connection, or even use a PC key too. This locks down access to a
selected ISP connection or even an individual PC.
There are obviously other alternatives, but it then becomes a question
of how much money you want to pay to secure the site.
