If you only intend to use the machine as the firewall, I'd say trash
the OS, and install a dedicated firewall distro. If you ain't an
expert in linux config, it deals with killing all the ports, not
including all the major utills that are known weak points etc.
although we mix hardward and linux firwalls here, I have found that
ipcop does a damn good job.
