Re: FN-FORUM: Browse network shares as standard web page

Looks like a useful product.

You can do real Outlook over the Internet without a VPN natively with
Outlook 2003 - look for RPC over HTTP.

Well well .. Look and ye shall find! Turns out "SSL VPN" technology does
exactly what we need .. and there are FREE pre-built, highly spec'd OSS
solutions available!

SSL Explorer Community Edition
(http://www.3sp.com/showSslExplorerCommunity.do) looks fantastic. Users
can
log into a web portal from home using their school username/password
(Active
Directory), then can browse network shares using their browser. They can
manage files in their personal area (download, delete, upload, rename,
etc).
If they have IE installed, they can connect to their personal area as a
Web
Folder, meaning they can open and edit documents directly!

There is also mention of being able to access other client-server
applications, such as the school Intranet, VNC and MS Exchange (e-mail
from
real Outlook, not web access). Some of these are possible with no
download
at all, some require the user to approve installation of an ActiveX
component, which enables a more traditional VPN connection to be
established.

It really does look quite incredible and the school are head-over-heels
that
they can get functionality they were told would cost £28k ish (price of
'Frog' server, plus annual fee) for the price of my consultancy fee! We
plan
to install and configure it all for them ready for September.

Thought I'd share the knowledge wealth!

Cheers, Ben
