I think it has to do with the dimensions of your
blown_up_images/blown_up_image_285.gif, which is 120 x 121. On this page:
http://www.d-stroy.co.uk/gallery.asp?Centre_Id=288 the
blown_up_images/blown_up_image_288.jpg is 780 x 570. Your thumbnail and your
blown up version of the image are the same size.

a little image surrounded by a big box instead of the box getting smaller.
