RE: FN-FORUM: Site check/valuation

Hi Tim,
I have had a look at the http://www.w-v-m.com/wvm/The_Malts.html site - I
have some comments for you, hoping though that I am not too harsh, given my
reputation in the past (hehe!):
1. On a purely personal basis, I am not sure if the green side bar directly
under the Weymss logo works for me - it seems to be too narrow?
2. Your "home" page for this site has the signature (as part of the logo)
which overlaps onto the image with the 3 bottles - whilst this looks good
(it helps to provide continuity), it then gets immediately broken when you
move onto any other page. I would personally look to perhaps increase the
width of this, so that you can keep the signature overlapping? Maybe
increase the width, so that the signature overlaps onto a thin white
'divder', which also acts as your margin?
3. In IE7 the menu system isn't working too well - it shows the menu
entries, but they don't all line up, and I think need some extra space
around each text (making the divs a little wider, perhaps?). Using in FF2
seems to work OK.
4. On a small point of preference - I think the order of the textboxes could
perhaps be changed; in my mind the order would flow better if the Title box
was put first, followed by a box for Forename then one for Surname. It helps
if you then need to automate storing of details later! I would also push the
receive newsletter tickbox and additional comments box to the right - they
would look better if in line with the rest.
5. A small point, relating to contact methods: you put telephone numbers and
email addresses for distributors, yet only put an email address for ordinary
sales - was this intentional? Accessibility fiends might state that anyone
who enjoys whisky but cannot access the site from their own computer, or do
no have access to email, may feel left out...Small point I know, but hey -
it could be possible...
6. The About Us seems to do something funky in my FF2 - initially it doubles
up the menu as 50% on 1 line, then the rest immediately below it, thereby
initally making the menu bar appear out of kilter with the rest of the
background graphic. Do a refresh, then it comes back - has anyone seen this?
I am not sure though that the castle pic really does that page justice - I
can see what you were trying to do, but it does not really work I think - a
style of image here that would work really well is a small drop shadow
effect around each one; check out
http://ajaxian.com/archives/onion-skinned-drop-shadows-with-javascript as a
starting point. I have not tried it out, so you may like to just test it to
see how it works - up to you!
Hope I have not been too harsh! ;)
Alex.

Hi,
I have done three sites, abstracted the commonalities and made a portal page
http://www.wemyss.biz
http://paneris.com/rimauresq/ gives the English and French versions of one
site.
http://www.w-v-m.com/wvm/index.jsp gives a similar intro page to the other.
I don't want people playing with the live sites but the CMS administration
is the same as http://www.melati.org/melati-webapp/Admin/contacts/Main
which you can play with.
The two are documented at http://www.paneris.net/wvm/ and
http://www.paneris.net/rimauresq/ respectively.
The common elements are documented at http://www.paneris.net/site/
I am interested in comments but not too harsh :)
I would also like some idea of what I should have charged for these sites,
given that they were delivered over a very long and non-commercial (hobby)
time frame.
cheers
timp
