FN-FORUM: Function to strip out HTML from data

I'm displaying a description of each course below the title, but
stripping it down to a certain amount of characters. I'd ideally like
to be able to add HTML into these course descriptions that appear in
full when you view the course outline. However this poses a problem
when I display a limited character count. For example I could strip
out a closing anchor tag and leave the remaining page contents as a
link. Can anyone provide some advice on how best to do this? I'm
currently thinking it would it be simpler to just add a 'short
description' field? This at least would solve the problem of
determining whether to display this field inside tags.
