I'm finding that using Textile (http://textile.thresholdstate.com/, as
used in TextPattern) as a simple markup language works well with a plain
old textarea. Allows the users to enter headings, lists, and even tables
relatively easily and intuitively, and produces compliant HTML when
processed.
Might we worth a thought if the user only needs to do simple text
formatting (e.g. bold, italic, lists, the occasional table), as it works
in any browser and is very simple to set up.
If you want them to be able to fiddle with the page layout more than
simple formatting it probably won't be so useful though. I prefer to keep
my users well away from being able to apply too much of their own
formatting!
Cheers!
