I'm forced to agree that penalising sites for selling links is
somewhat hypocritical as Google themselves effectively sell links
through their AdWords and AdSense schemes. The 'quality' of their
'sponsored links' results is generally more questionable than the
natural results even WITH the spam.

Arguably Google could be exploiting it's monopoly position by seeking
to demote (and thereby devalue) sites which are essentially competing
with it for potential link revenue.

eg: http://www.thebestof.co.uk/ is a directory of local businesses
built by franchise holders in various cities around the UK.
Advertisers buy entries which are optimized to rank well in natural
Google results and which include a link to the advertiser's web site
from a page of relevant content. This naturally improves the PageRank
score via a paid service.

"Buying links to improve PageRank violates our quality guidelines."

Is TheBestOf and it's advertisers breaking this rule?
