Re: FN-FORUM: 123-Reg Domain Names
date posted 17th November 2007 19:22
What prevents me from using places like Dreamhost (which I believe is =20=
in the US) is a fear that if I am setting up a site which uses a =20
database and that data contains names and addresses then at any time =20
it is able to be seized by the US authorities under the anti-=20
terrorism acts... in effect I can't guarantee a completely reliable =20
service if it gets shut down. I have no reason to think any site =20
we've done would suffer in this way, but you can never be too sure!
What I am less certain about is whether our own data protection act =20
would prevent us from taking data about UK citizens and storing it =20
out of the UK, especially if the site was gathering names, addresses =20
and so on. We are registered as a data controller for the very reason =20=
that we do handle this kind of data, and I think we have to keep it =20
inside the UK (or at least EU).
Anyone got any info on this? It's a grey area for me.
