Sounds like it is a motherboard fault. I would try a PCI Network card...

No event log messages stick out and the network card is onboard the
motherboard so could possibly be a failure on the motherboard?
The old drive was a 40 GB SCSi while the new drive is a 160 GB SCSi...

Nah it still failed today even after updating the NIC driver. The server
runs document scanning software and only seems to crash out after a few
