How do you check? By FTPing it back again? Or checksumming it in place?

What form does the corruption take?

What's the OS on the server? Is it shared or dedicated?

I'd be very worried by this - a particular filetype being modified on the
fly by a webserver does sound a little bit like this:

and there have been a number of potential jpeg exploits in the
past.

Can you post a link to a corrupt jpeg? (Or mail it off-list if you would
rather).
