Have you inspected the file with a hex editor to see what is actually in
there.

This error message together with the previous problems seriously
indicates to me that there is probably some junk at the start or end of
the file and the only way to find out is to look at it.

Also download it via http, and then use cmp (Linux) to compare it with
the file downloaded by ftp.
