I'm not aware that anyone has managed to break 128-bit SSL yet.
The main cost in the more expensive certificates is in verifying that the
person purchasing the certificate is who they say they are, and that
they're authorised to do so. So it's the site validation part, not the
communication encryption part, of the certificate that costs more.
RapidSSL just require someone who can respond to e-mails at the same
domain that the certificate is for, which is reasonably OK.
