Is there a space after the >, does it make any difference if there is and
you take it out?

Local delivery aliases sound like a similar problem, something that isn't
a valid e-mail address being interpreted as a local delivery address
instead.

Looks like a Qmail thing, sorry I don't know anything about Qmail...
