Another thing to think about, as well as what the job might be worth to
you (time taken times hourly rate) is what the job is worth to the
customer. They probably don't care too much what you hourly rate is, they
want to invest some cash to get a return. Find out, roughly, what their
budget is, and then tell them what you can do for the budget.
I like to think of costing a website as costing a custom-built house. You
can't ask a builder/architect to quote for a five bedroom house with three
reception rooms and expect an answer. You need to set a budget, and then
work out which areas of the build are most important to you (bigger rooms,
or gold taps in the bathroom?), remembering that the detail can make a
huge difference to the overall cost. For anything more than a trivial
site, the whole thing is a two-way process of discussion and negotiation,
both while trying to set a price, and when actually doing the work.
