Basically:

1) Some people prefer working with open-source code, so you can see
exactly what it's doing.
2) Some people like open standards (such as HTML, CSS, etc.) and prefer
software that conforms to those standards. Recent announcements suggest
that Microsoft's approach to developing Internet Explorer might be
changing for the better now :)
3) Microsoft have an infamous past of not-very-friendly business tactics
