I've built many, successful online stores all using OSCommerce as the
base application.
I find it so versatile, most times the stores are not recognisable as
using OSC.
I have integrated different payment options from Paypal to HSBC with no
problems.

The stores don't have thousands of products but there are plenty of big
stores using it.
