I would also recommend Postifx as an MTA (for UNIX style systems).
Postfix is a highly reliable and highly scalable MTA, and has support for
virtual domains. I've been using it on various servers for years and
never encountered a problem with it. It also integrates very well with
other software such as SpamAssassin or ClamAV for anti-spam or anti-virus
solutions.
It also integrates well with Courier-IMAP or Dovecot, both IMAP (or POP)
servers that provide functionality such as shared folders.

This software is open source, so there are no license fees wither.
Postfix is available at www.postfix.org, Courier-IMAP from
www.courier-mta.org, Dovecot from www.dovecot.org, ClamAV from
www.clamav.org, SpamAssassin from http://spamassassin.apache.org/ and
Amavisd-new (a middle layer between Postfix and mail scanning systems like
SpamAssassin or ClamAV) can be downloaded from
http://www.ijs.si/software/amavisd/
