I've got to say that for flexibility, scalability and stability this is the
approach I would take if implementing something internally (and also if I was
offering a hosted solution, although depending on your internal skill sets
your milage may vary, as it would with any other mail system). Although
after attending a talk by Alex Hudson of the bongo project
(http://www.bongo-project.org/Main_Page) I have to say there is still rather
a lot of work to be done in terms of data portability and standardisation
between collaboration type systems.
Its interesting to see how many commercial applications now exist that either
sit on top of (or beside) solid open source systems (either in compliance
with or skirting the licenses that technology is provided under), making the
most of the open source technology whilst providing better (or different)
management and configuration support.
There really are a wealth of great options out there for anyone providing mail
and collaboration services.
