RE: FN-FORUM: Oscommerce / STS - where is the download ??

date posted 14th April 2008 23:27

Go with osCommerce - STS is pretty straightforward to install, and once =
it
is in place, it will allow you to do what you are looking for. It is =
table
based, but provided you follow the instructions about the "keywords" you =
can
put in to dictate what bit goes where, then you can change it over to =
pretty
much anything you like. I think ZenCart will allow you to do something
similar, but I am not so sure it is as nice to use (in my opinion), or =
as
easy to customize. Besides which, Zencart is based on osCommerce in =
anycase
- why dally around, when you can go to the horse's mouth, so to speak?

If you want to get any books on it - you can try the osCommerce =
Beginner's
book from Packet Publishing - www.packtpub.com; there is the more =
advanced
level book, but I don't think this got as good a rating as the other =
one.
Make sure you have something like Apache (or similar) installed - =
setting up
osCommerce is a doddle to do, and you can always revert back, provided =
you
take a backup copy of the basic site, before changing any code. Put it =
this
way - although I understand HTML code, I have never really had any
experience (as such), and only started looking at osCommerce about =
5-6months
ago, when a friend wanted me to take over hosting a VERY complicated osC
build. Don't be afraid to try it - STS is easy to do, it just has a few
steps involved, and that you will feel more confident about installing =
it
once you have done it a few times.=20

A tip for you - I take it that it is a UK based site? How good are you =
at
running SQL code? There is a very useful "mod" called "UK osCommerce" (I
think) which will convert the site to a UK-based one, with UK dates, =
etc. It
is just a case of copying files straight over the top of the originals =
(it
even provides the correct folder structure), and running the SQL code in =
the
install folder within this download. Try this out as a start - see how =
you
get on. If you can manage this one, you should be fine with STS.

Does this help? Email me on or off-list if you need any further help.

Alex.

Subject: Re: FN-FORUM: Oscommerce / STS - where is the download ??

Well someone on this forum recommended it for a relatively easy way to
customise your template layout a couple of weeks back...

I don=B9t know where to start but my position is this:

I have been designing and updating a website for a company for several
years, the last update they were really happy with - no database, no
ecommerce, just nice looking layout.

Now they are looking at the logistics of adding ecommerce ability to it, =
I
thought I will use a system like oscommerce or zencart or similar, so =
that
they can manage their products at their end, but I need to be able to
customise the template and ideally use the layout that I have now

Can anyone recommend a system where I can design my pages using CSS and =
HTML
and then use this layout (within reason of course)

How about Joomla/Virtuemart

It's all very well saying hire a pro, but for what kind of money, =
because I
obviously want to earn out of it and if it is going to cost me 1500.00 =
for a
weeks work then I wont ... And I would obviously like to learn a system =
to
use in case anything similar crops up in the future

So any recommendations ?

Thanks in advance

John
