Having worked with .NET and its competitors for a long time I have to agree that it is "too complicated"; getting large systems to build and all work together is always a painful experience compared to say J2EE. VisualStudio has to be one of the worst IDEs around, I will always remember the many hours I have spent tearing out what little hair I have left trying to make it behave sensibly. It can be used for serious development, it just takes longer.
This however is not the same thing as being dead; with the weight of Microsoft behind it and a vast number of installed systems it will live for a long time yet.
