FN-FORUM: RE: ASP/ASP.NET 2.0/3.5. Which is best?
date posted 17th April 2008 18:10
Many thanks for *all* the replies to this question (and for those who =
have
replied off list).
Having programmed in the past mainly in C, C++ and VB6, I am all for =
good
coding practices - e.g. OO in particular. (Don't get started on whether =
VB
was/is truly object oriented). I have also seen large serious =
development
projects go into reverse because of the overhead of trying to follow OO =
etc
too strictly - multi-tier development etc which has ended up =
disappearing up
it's own a*s**o** due to complexity.
As I said, I am actually a proponent of quality programming models and =
can
see that in (ASP).NET. However, having read the Wrox book "Beginning =
ASP.NET
2.0", some of the code samples for an ecommerce app seem "too =
complicated".
I haven't got the book with me but if I remember rightly using the .NET =
2.0
classes seems incredibly difficult.
This is going to be a long term investment (possibly needing =
short/medium
term gratification though), so I am not against making a decision to use
.NET as long as someone can tell me that the complexities (all the data
binding etc) get simpler with (little) time.
I have also read that .NET 2.0 has massive security improvements over =
ASP
classic. This is paramount to us. However we have been advised that =
despite
the ready made objects in 2.0 avoiding common security flaws (SQL =
injection
etc), if a developer wants to do anything off track, then everything =
becomes
very difficult and this seems to be what I have seen in the code =
samples.
Haven't considered J2EE (and don't know anything about it), but would
consider learning a technology from scratch if someone could convince me
that the TCO would be lower (in other words it's the real cost that =
counts
:-)
Comments please

Sorry if this steals some of your thunder Mr(s) PHP but I have a =
question
about ASP/ASP.NET. Maybe you can help with ASP.
I need to create several medium to large web sites for a company. We =
intend
to outsource technical aspects of the site(s) such as programming for
e-commerce etc.
More details should follow in a future posting but for now;
We had been planning to develop in ASP.NET 2.0/3.5 but recently some =
(ASP
based) people/companies have tried to convince us that .NET is dead and
buried because it is too complicated to develop in.
I have searched everywhere on the net but can't find any independent
articles explaining the real differences between ASP and ASP.NET. Lots =
of
articles listing the theoretical advantages of .NET but none saying what =
all
the real world disadvantages are. At the moment, .NET 2.0 is preferable
because I have spent a bit of time learning it and have seen some =
features
which I like in particular what I have heard of security.
1. Can anyone comment?
2. Any developers who want to make themselves known to me at this stage?
Regards,
Clark Johnson
