FN-FORUM: vista laptop - 45 mins disc activity when doing nothing

I usually use a mac, but i bought a 17 inch vista laptop to take
presentations to meetings as well as watching tv and films on, I am using it
now as my mac is dead

the disc drive is making a constant pulsating grinding noise like a far
away rave party, and has been doing so for almost an hour,despite only using
internet explorer

i have clicked the 'task manager' and it says that i only have 38 percent
physical memory - so i am assuming the rest is used by vistas automatic
nonsense


is this unusual - and how can i take steps to stopping it as i am sure it is
slowing everything down
