Don't assume it will do what you tell it to. ;)

I had a similar problem with my XP machine due to about 500 viruses.
I tried to wipe them out with Virus Scanning software but the O/S was
shot to bits.

Could be viruses. Have you had the machine connected to the internet
or something silly like that? ;)
