thanks all for recommendations on data recovery -


i used data rescue 2, which i have used several times previously - i tested
and opened a few workable files - and the rest are processing - but it looks
like the whole lot is salvagable

i cannot recommend the program enough, especially as the technician was so
doubtful last night

and i got my new mac with 8GB ram - woof
