First line of action is make your contract sound.
Many freelancers see contracts as just something that's needed to do before
starting a project without really thinking about the content.

I always suggest late payment penalties and early settlement benefits,
anything to encourage clients to pay early.
In todays climate late payments are an increasing problem so your contract
becomes ever more important.

Things I would suggest:
- Contract - What is stated on the contract about non/ late payment?

- Credit check company - Before taking on a new company it is usually
good sense to check with a credit company.

- Debt recovery agency - If all else fails and you can't go to the small
claims court then send in the boys.
