Summary

I have a solid background in IT that has been built on in a work environment since 1990, and was based on an interest in computers that started in 1981. I have progressed from being a customer of the IT department in a technical role, through a support role and on into administration. The move into senior roles was based not only on my ability to do the job, but my interest in innovation and emerging technologies. I have worked in a variety of environments from terminal emulation to client server, and from OS/2 through various versions of Windows to Unix/Linux. At all times the ability to mix environments to ensure smooth migration has been key. Having spent 10 years at the same location (IBM / Xyratex / Teleplan being the changing face of a single ex-IBM site) I took advantage of a voluntary package and moved to a much smaller company. I left this new employer on good terms having been given the opportunity to join a new venture based on a voluntary project that I was involved with. Unfortunately this did not succeed and went into receivership leaving me with a choice for my next move. I decided to use my experience to trade independently to give myself the time to take stock. I have since done work for customers of my previous employer, as well as new ones, and have written for the computer press. I have a broad skill set that would fit the requirements of a SME well, particularly with the background I have in WAN/LAN setups, VPN and Internet technologies which would suite a growing organisation. For example: the current Aptanet infrastructure uses a SMTP/IMAP mail server with LDAP directory, Intranet web server with HTTPS, Perl and PHP support. A dedicated Firewall with DMZ for BIND based DNS, with ADSL router and external managed web/mail server. The internal network uses a mixed 16M token ring and 100M ethernet, with Windows 2000, Linux and Mac clients. Experience Sys. Admin. Experience of server administration on OS/2, Windows NT/2000, AIX and Linux platforms. Network design and implementation using Windows NT for Xyratex and Teleplan, and using Linux for Webtastic, CaveOnet and Aptanet. Networking Have worked with and setup full network environments using LAN, WAN and VPN technologies with token ring, ethernet, analogue and ISDN dial up, and ADSL. Databases Administration Microsoft SQL Server on Windows NT for Xyratex and Teleplan and MySQL on Linux for Webtastic, CaveOnet and Aptanet. Web Design Site design, implementation and maintenance; Intranet and external sites for Teleplan (not external design), CaveOnet and Aptanet. Scripting, primarily using Perl and SQL for back end database driven sites for Webtastic, CaveOnet and Aptanet, including shout99.com and pcgroup.org.uk (Webtastic) and tudorsc.co.uk and plsa.org.uk (Aptanet, including graphics). Customer support system designed for Xyratex using Javascript, SQL and CGI allowing customers and support staff to raise and track calls. Security Site anti-virus coordinator for IBM / Xyratex / Teleplan. Administered software based firewalls, AIX based IBM Firewall and Linux based SmoothWall and IPCop. Employment History Aptanet (Nov 2001 ᅵ Present) = Proprietor CaveOnet (May 2001 ᅵ Oct 2001) = Technical Infrastructure Manager Webtastic (July 2000 ᅵ May 2001) = Systems Administrator IBM / Xyratex / Teleplan (Aug 1990 ᅵ July 2000) = Internet Systems Specialist / Sys. Admin. = PC Support Analyst / Laboratory Engineer STC (May 1990 ᅵ July 1990) = Junior Engineer

Aptanet

A concept that I'm working on as a personal project. Moving slowly along when I get the time! The more active section of the site is the forum run on phpBB (primary location for Otter sailing dinghy owners).

Portsmouth & Langstone Sailing Assocn.

Taken this one from the concept stages as a follow on from editing their Yearbook. Content, back end scripting, graphics (including most of the photography). Currently in the ongoing maintenance stage as a benchmark site for Aptanet.

Webtastic (as employee)

http://www.shout99.com/

Took over maintenance of this site and promptly had to work on migrating the whole operation to a new server (at the same time as an office move - thankfully it wasn't single handed!). A decent amount of work on the Apache configuration to tighten security with regards to file access. No longer run this site.

Took over maintenance of this site and promptly had to work on migrating the whole operation to a new server (at the same time as an office move - thankfully it wasn't single handed!). A decent amount of work on the Apache configuration to tighten security with regards to file access. Another key piece of work was on the scripts for the annual elections which had caused a heavy server load, but were reworked to use just a fraction of the processing power. Domain no longer used.

Teleplan (as employee)

http://www.teleplan-int.com/

Not involved in the design for this, but took it over from the design house as it was completed and had to do some tweaking and work in some updates. The key reason for adding this here was to note this page http://www.teleplan-int.com/europeloc.html . Take a close look at the Ireland entry (I'm assuming this hasn't been changed since I added this reference!). The page is made up of a number of images with image maps. To add the Ireland reference I only had access to the JPEG files, so there was some serious graphic editing to do. Font identifying and blurring to match, image map editing (including moving accross images as the text had to move between files). Domain no longer used.
