Freelance Content Writer

I have worked on the following sites as an editor, freelance writer or both! Below are just a few examples, there are many others but they have disappeared from the internet for one reason or another, which is slightly annoying as the work created for those sites has also disappeared from view. Techmash http://techmash.co.uk this is my personal site dedicated to technology, gadgets and anything interesting, it keeps me busy during the quiet times.

April 2017 to June 2017

Temporary sales manager

In Nature Teas

This position involves calling on potential new customers to promote the product with a view of them buying for in house use or for resale depending on the type of business. The company sells a wide variety of teas from family farms in China. This is a high end product and requires a lot of hard work. The problem for me is that it is not a full time position and I am really looking for something that offers more of a challenge and is rewarding at the same time. https://innatureteas.com/

August 2015 to October 2016

Sales manager

Vacant Space Management

This position is based on the sales and marketing of used desks, cabinets & other used office furniture and new stationery. Allied and Equity Ltd was set up to provide the warehouse and stock, while I manage the sales through Gumtree and eBay http://stores.ebay.co.uk/AlliedEquity this is the link http://feedback.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewFeedback2&userid=allied_equity to the customer feedback built over the time in this position and face to face with customers who visit the warehouse in Lowestoft. We worked on a 50/50 basis, basic salary and it worked out quite well despite the warehouse being broken into on a regular basis, which is a shame really as this business was really taking off. Now the landlord has decided to develop the site and so without any suitable premises to work from the business has been closed.

April 2015 to August 2015

Temporary events and sponsorship manager

Torch Marketing

Working on various projects including the Sustainable Energy & Technology Asia 2016 (SETA 2016). This event is aiming to be the leading annual meeting place for the energy industry, its a place where the latest sustainable energy issues and industry challenges will be discussed. My job is to market the event to the sustainable energy sector by phone or email. I have been using contact lists and trade directories to acquire the contact details of potential new customers. This is a very interesting position, but it is limited by the availability of spaces, once these are filled the job is complete. http://www.torchmarketing.co.uk/

Dec 2013 to Aug 2015

Forum moderator

UBM

This was a salaried position involving several news and information websites run by UBM http://www.ubm.com/ the job was to engage with the users of the site, which was both challenging and interesting all rolled into one. The sites were tech based and covered anything from Telecommunications to Broadband, so you can imagine the variety of questions and comments posted on the sites, these are the four main sites worked on;
http://www.enterpriseconnect.com/ - http://www.networkcomputing.com/
http://www.icmi.com/ - http://www.informationweek.com/

Aug 2006 to Oct 2011

Senior Editor

Zedomax Network

The Zedomax Network http://zedomax.com/blog/about/ was a network of websites covering everything from cars to computers, gadgets to software and everything in between. The network had established writers and my job was to make sure that the content fresh, up to date and that it met the standards required. I also produced content on a daily basis across the network ensuring that there was new content published every day. The trouble here was a combination of Google changing the way that search results were calculated and not to mention the worldwide financial crisis, advertising fell off dramatically due to cutbacks and gradually over time the content was reduced until there was no way of carrying on.

Aug 2001 to May 2004

Director of Operations (COO)

Netmateworld

As COO of http://www.netmateworld.com/ it was my job to ensure the smooth running of the business, working with staff and clients based around the world. I had responsibility for recruiting and managing staff, as well as making business decisions for the company in the absence of the President and the CEO. I gained a lot of experience here and had to carry out some interesting and exciting duties, such as negotiations, sales and managing staff. This was a great learning opportunity, it was a pity that the finances were not as solid as the owners made out they were.

Aug 2001 to July 2002

Sales and Marketing Director

The Traveler Exchange

The Traveler Exchange http://www.travelerexchange.com/ was a cool and exciting idea started in Slovakia and spanning the entire world. It is a website designed for travellers to make contact and leave tips for others on the interesting places that they had been to or are staying over in. This was a bit like a notice board for travellers to leave notes etc.

Sept 1999 to July 2002

Managing Editor

Suite101.com

Suite 101 http://www.suite101.com/welcome.cfm/espionage/ is a brilliant site where writers can produce content on almost any subject. It became a knowledge base where skills and experiences can be shared. My subject was Military Science, which basically covers everything from tactics to spying.

1992 to 1997

Marketing Director

Interchange East Commercial Property Development

Interchange East was a small commercial site in Clapton, East London, it has thirty units of various sizes from 1500 sq ft up to 20000 sq ft. My job was to market this development and negotiate long term leases with business owners. This job was limited and when the final leases were signed off, the job was finished and so was the property market for a while. This was a really interesting opportunity; the downside was that it was always limited until the point where there were enough tenants in place to make it a viable investment for another company. The sad thing was, the more successful I was the less time I had there.

1989 to 1992

Sales Manager

Essex Copiers Ltd

I managed a small team selling new and used business machines (Copiers, Faxes and
Computers) to businesses in the south east of the country. This was a tough business to be in, with a lot of competition. The good news is that there were a lot of potential customers too, so it was just a matter of hard work, cold calling and a lot of leg work meeting potential new customers in order to be successful in this business, this was very hard work and yet once you have secured a sale, the feeling was wonderful and rewarding.

1987 to 1989

Regional Sales Manager

Anglian Windows Plc

This was a challenging position in direct sales to the public, the product was fully fitted kitchens and the market at the time was very busy indeed. The job involved, recruiting new salespeople, looking after them when they came back from the training course. The business was run on telesales leads; the sales people went out to the leads, measured up, showed some samples and then came up with a price that suited their budget. It was fun, but very hard as the whole business relied on commission payments.

1978 to 1987

Stock Market Analyst

Keith, Bailey, Rogers & Co

This was my very first job, I started off in the office as a Dividends Clerk, but my interest in business was soon noticed and I was sent down to the London Stock Exchange to learn dealing. It was a brilliant job and it was a shame that things had to change to those old classic share dealing practices. This is nothing like the investment industry today, it was much slower, the business relied on hard work and plenty of research. There was no internet, so everything was done by hand and there was a lot of tradition, within the company and the Stock Exchange, I also had a “Blue Button” which as a badge that allowed me to go onto the trading floor and get share prices for the partners, I progressed to be a dealer “Yellow Button” and then went back to the main office to work in the investments department, which was very interesting,
